WHY IS ART SO IMPORTANT FOR KIDS?
We all know that art is important for children but have you ever thought about exactly why this is? Kids have an innate desire to create, explore and design so, as parents or teachers, it is vital to nurture and develop this. Engaging in art activities helps them to develop their creativity, express themselves and learn about the world around them. Art can also help kids to develop their fine motor skills, problem-solving abilities and self-esteem, so let’s dive in and find out why this favourite subject of mine is so essential to our children.
Creativity
Art encourages kids to be creative and think outside the box. It gives them the freedom to explore different ideas and express themselves however they want. Creativity helps us to adapt to changes and challenges in our environment - an important skill to have throughout or lives!
Expression
Art can be a way for kids to express themselves and their emotions. It can help them to deal with difficult times in their lives or simply express their happiness, joy and personality.
Learning
Art can be a fun and engaging way for kids to learn about the world around them. They can learn about different cultures, science, historical events and natural phenomena through art and learning about different artists.
Fine motor skills
Art can also help children to develop their fine motor skills. This is important for tasks like writing, drawing and playing musical instruments. Many activities at our Stay & Create sessions, such as tools in the rice trays, drawing in sand etc. are helpful in developing these fine motor skills.
Problem-solving abilities
Problem-solving abilities are consistently being built upon when engaging in artistic activities. Children need to think creatively and come up with solutions to problems in order to create art. This can be as simple as choosing the correct medium to use when creating their artwork to more technical design considerations. Junk modelling is a great example of this, so raid the recycling bin!
Self-esteem
Art is a great tool in helping children to develop their self-esteem and confidence. When they see their own artwork, they can feel proud of themselves and their accomplishments.
Overall, art is quite clearly invaluable for children of all ages. It can help them develop their creativity, express themselves, learn about the world around them and develop important skills.
