HOW TO MAKE BIRDFEEDERS

This week, we’ve been reading ‘Nature Book’ by Clare Beaton. It’s a great way to discover the natural world by reading and making – my two favourite things! This book is perfect for rainy day activities for the family to learn and make together.

We used the book to learn about birds and then made bird feeders to hang in the garden, with this simple method.

You will need:

  • birdseed

  • coconut oil

  • ribbon or string

  • cocktail sticks or point object

  • cookie cutters

  • tray

How to make the birdfeeders:

  1. To make the birdseed, all you have to do is mix up one cup of birdseed (I bought a huge bag from the local greengrocer for just 95p!) with two teaspoons of melted coconut oil (20 seconds in the microwave should do it!).

  2. Lay the cookie cutters out on a tray. Bigger cutters are better here!

  3. Spoon the mixture into the cutters and use the cocktail stick to make a hole in the shapes.

  4. Put the whole tray in the fridge until the oil sets – about half an hour should be enough.

  5. Once hardened, thread some string or ribbon through the hole and hang outside!
